DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS
Director of Development – The Academy of Fine Arts, downtown Lynchburg’s leading fine arts organization, is seeking a full time Director of Development. The Director is responsible for leading and administering the current Capital Campaign to restore the 106-year old Academy of Music Theatre and the on-going Annual Campaign.
The Director of Development plans, organizes, and directs all on-going and special project fundraising programs identified by the leadership of the Academy of Fine Arts. These include, but are not limited to, the annual fund, capital projects (Cornerstone Campaign), grants, planned giving, endowment fund, and special events. He/She works with key staff, Board of Trustees, volunteers, and donors to carry out those duties. Reports to the Executive Director.
Must possess strong computer skills. Must be proficient in learning and implementing new program software.

Director of Development, Opera on the James

Opera on the James was founded in 2005 to produce staged opera in area of Central Virginia centered on Lynchburg. The company produces two staged operas and one concert or cabaret fundraiser each season, has a budget of more than $400,000 per year and a board of directors of twenty-five members, and is a professional company member of Opera America.
The Director of Development is responsible and accountable for planning, implementing, and managing all fundraising efforts in order to achieve the contributed income goals of Opera on the James (currently $200,000). S/he provides leadership, relationship development, and strategic direction to efforts to secure annual fund gifts, sponsorships, government grants, and special event underwriting, as well as additional funding for endowment and capital projects. S/he represents the Company to the community in the cultivation of prospects and donors. S/he establishes and maintains positive and productive relationships with the local business and foundation community on behalf of the Opera on the James. The Director of Development reports to the General Director.
Major Duties
- Act as contact for corporate funding
- Maintain database/schedule of annual institutional and individual giving
- Send all donation acknowledgement receipts
- Coordinate letters and mailing lists for fundraising appeal mailings
- Assist in development of appeal materials with General Director, Board President and Resource Committee Chair
- Work with General Director for all development events
- Maintain updated info/research within Development department and field
- Provide support to the Resource Committee of the Board and ensure that members have information and materials they need to be effective in their work on behalf of Opera on the James
- Additional tasks as assigned
Desirable Qualifications
- Two to three years successful experience in a senior development position with a not-for profit organization.
- Bachelors Degree in English, Communication, Arts Administration, or related field. Experience in music/opera and non-profits.
- Experience in the design and implementation of annual fund and major gift campaigns, endowment campaigns, planned giving programs, and special project fundraising efforts.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Good research skills/methods.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Knowledge and experience in researching and submitting corporate, foundation, and government grants.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Access-type databases
Compensation
Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra looking for an Intern
The Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra is revamping their music library and needs help! Music will be transferred to envelopes and stored in cabinets.
